The Docklands, London

It was 1991 when Canary Wharf Tower, at the time the tallest building in Europe, put London Docklands on the map as a business centre, but the area has changed almost unrecognisably since then. In twenty years it has matured into a mini Manhattan on Thames, with several shiny new towers occupied by international banks and businesses, as well as waterside bars and restaurants, arts venues and a vast underground shopping mall.

Though not in central London, communications are superb. The elevated Docklands Light Railway direct in to the City (15 mins, with great views along the way), the Jubilee Line direct to the West End (20mins) and Stratford; a fast river bus service into town (20mins); and international flights from City Airport.

Be aware however that London Docklands comes in two parts: the high rises of Canary Wharf and the flat open spaces around the Royal Docks, home to City Airport and the ExCel exhibition and conference centre.

It's not all business - the Museum of London has a Docklands outpost, there are landscaped parks, historic Greenwich and the O2 arena across the river, and of course excellent opportunities for watersports.

London Hilton hotels have a presence right in the heart of the Isle of Dogs - the London Hilton Canary Wharf - but offer cheaper rooms just across the river in Rotherhithe at London Hilton Docklands, with its own ferry service to take you to and fro. Other Canary Wharf hotels include deluxe Four Seasons, and the Radisson Edwardian at New Providence Wharf.

The Ibis chain has several hotels near and around Docklands: Ibis London Docklands by the Blackwall Tunnel, Ibis ExCel, and two Ibis hotels near Docklands - Ibis Greenwich and Ibis London City.

The Royal Docks are served by the Crowne Plaza London Docklands, the main hotel for the ExCel centre, part of the Holiday Inn chain.

London Docklands hotels will also be a perfectly situated for anyone visiting East London for the 2012 Olympics.
