London Theatre Hotels
London Theatreland hotels
London's theatre scene is legendary, but it's not just tourists who flock to London's Theatreland; in recent years it has attracted Hollywood stars eager to prove themselves on the London stage.
London's most popular shows - long running musicals and transfers that have already proved themselves in smaller venues - tend to be on in the West End, concentrated along Shaftesbury Ave, down Haymarket, and around St Martin's Lane, Aldwych and Covent Garden. This is also where you'll find ample choice of hotels, from cheap hotels off the main drag, to designer and deluxe hotels in key locations such as Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, the Strand, St Martin's Lane and even Shaftesbury Avenue itself.
There are quirky hotels like Hazlitt's hidden away in Soho and around Covent Garden, and boutique hotels such as the Radisson Edwardian tucked behind Leicester Square.
South of the river the National Theatre offers a strong and varied programme in its three theatre spaces (as well as cut-price ticket deals) while the Old and Young Vic theatres often attract star names. Off-west end theatres that have made a name for themselves with new writing and The Almeida and the King's Head in chi chi Islington, The Royal Court in upmarket Sloane Square, The Gate in bourgeois-boho Notting Hill, the Menier Chocolate Factory in gritty Southwark, and the Battersea Arts Centre (which gave birth to Jerry Springer the Opera). These offer a chance catch the originals in more intimate spaces before they transfer to the West End. Though these areas offer less choice of hotels, you'll get more for your money than in the heart of the West End.
Such is the popularity of London theatre breaks that several hotels and independent companies offer packages combining hard-to-get London theatre tickets with hotel accommodation - though it's best to check the locations of the hotels on offer as they won't necessarily be anywhere near the theatres.
