| String of Pearls Millennium Festival
|
| More than 60 of Britain's greatest institutions will be granting unprecedented levels of access and extending a special welcome to visitors as part of The London String of Pearls Millennium Festival - a year-long extravaganza of privileged access, exhibitions, special tours, performances, concerts, commissioned works, son et lumiere, parades, fireworks and community projects. Situated along the River Thames in London - never more than a ten-minute stroll from its banks - these world-famous landmarks, among them Lambeth Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, the Royal Courts of Justice, and St Paul's Cathedral, create a "string of pearls" at the heart of the capital, from Greenwich in the east to Kew in the west, threaded together by the Thames Path and the new boat services. The London String of Pearls Millennium Festival will explore, explain and celebrate the themes of democracy, justice, religious faith, freedom of speech, the arts, commerce, science, medicine, education, recreation, defence and community - the great "building blocks" of society. During the year 2000 these organisations will open themselves up to the public, both physically and intellectually. Some will open their doors for the first time ever. Others will create access to parts of their buildings not previously visited. Many will mount special exhibitions and events which explaining what they do and why. Some will collaborate with artists, or one another, to provide a new perspective on their role and meaning. All will be inviting people through their doors to see new things, explore, question and find out.
