English National Opera: Orphee
THIS EVENT ENDED ON THE 29TH NOVEMBER 2019

It staged the Olivier Award-winning Akhnaten this year and Satyagraha the year before and with this new production of Orphee, English National Opera continues its exploration of the music of Philip Glass. In a show that fuses cinema and opera, Netia Jones directs a multi-media production with projected extracts of Cocteau's film and a set in constant motion. Based on Jean Cocteau's 1950 film, the plot follows Orphee who falls in love with an enigmatic Princess. He then moves between the worlds of the living and the dead in this parable about the dangers of self-obsession. Sarah Tynan sings Eurydice in her second take on the role in the season while Jennifer France, winner of the 2018 Emerging Talent Award from the Critics Circle, makes her ENO debut as the Princess.
