Wellcome Collection: Being Human
Nearby

Replacing Medicine Now as a permanent display at the Wellcome Collection, Being Human is a free exhibition which takes a fresh approach to health, science, art and medicine. Exploring what it means to be human, the first floor display includes 20 life-size nude portraits, chewed up gum and a life-size figure of an astronaut suited in Nigerian patterns. Drawing on different perspectives and personal stories from artists, activists, clinicians and researchers, the exhibition challenges how we think about ourselves, each other and the world around us. Situated in the heart of the building, the display digs into our hopes and fears about medical advances and our impact on the environment. Organised thematically, it explores the global challenges of our time including climate change and infectious disease. Intriguing exhibits vary from a DNA sequencer smaller than an iPhone to a Friendship Bench which takes counselling outside the clinic.
About Wellcome Collection
A major and fascinating cultural venue, the Wellcome Collection combines three galleries: 'Medicine Man', 'Medicine Now' and 'special exhibitions'. In addition you'll find the famous Wellcome Library, cafe, bookshop and a 'forum' to consider issues of science, health and human identity. The 1,300 objects on display show the great variety of considerations that these topics include. More about Wellcome Collection
