Set in the winding streets of Hampstead Village, the National Trust-owned, late 17th-century Fenton House contains an outstanding collection of porcelain, needlework pictures and Georgian furniture. It also boasts the Benton Fletcher Collection of early keyboard and musical instruments, most of which are in working order. Completed in 1693 and bought by Philip Fenton, a Baltic merchant, in 1793, Fenton House has remained relatively untouched through the years - and on the first floor boasts that rare gem of a London drawing room still with its 18th-century appearance. The main dining room is now used for concerts and contains the biggest harpsichord built in England. The delightful walled garden includes terrace walk, a sunken rose garden, a 300-year-old apple orchard, a working kitchen garden and a dogs' graveyard. There is a bee colony in the orchard producing honey for sale, while Fenton's panoramic views over London are quite marvellous - and best appreciated from the merchant house's attics which are open to the public.
