Fifty metres from Hackney Wick Overground Station, located in the heart of Hackney Wick, The Hackney Pearl mixes a haute cuisine menu with a lengthy wine list. Set up by artist James Morgan, a Hackney resident for 10 years, he was drawn to the Wick partly because he liked the idea of serving a clientele that includes local artists. Having worked in restaurants in Australia he worked front of house at St John in Clerkenwell for five years and this is his first solo venture. Open all day, you can drop in for a brew served in a vintage china cup while cakes and pastries sit on the counter. Alternatively, stay for a three course supper - a blackboard shows the daily changing snacks and mains - and on Tuesday nights you can get a main course and glass of wine for a mere £10. Given all this, The Hackney Pearl could well achieve its aims to become: "a lustrous gem nestled in a rough exterior".
