The arts centre at the heart of cultural life in Croydon featuring a concert hall and the 809-seat Ashcroft Playhouse, Fairfield Halls were opened by the Queen Mother on November 2nd 1962 and underwent a major multi-million-pound refurbishment in 2019. Host to some of the greatest stars of music, variety, comedy, opera and theatre for over 50 years, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Kraftwerk and Gladys Knight have graced Fairfield's stages which includes the 1,802-seat Phoenix Concert Hall. Spaces across the building include the Arnhem Foyer - a community hub with a free programme of events and exhibitions. New spaces opened in autumn 2019 include The Recreational (750-capacity standing live music venue), the Savvy Studio, the Talawa Studio and John Whitgift Community Cube. Two companies, Talawa, the UK's primary Black led touring theatre company, and the award-winning and inclusive Savvy Theatre Company, are both in residence in the venue. Highlights of the 2019 theatre programme include Angela's Ashes - The Musical, Christmas panto Cinderella starring Strictly Come Dancing star Ore Oduba, Tim Vine and CBeebies favourite Cat Sandion as well as Once the Musical.
