From the Trigano family (co-founder of Club Med) and designer Philippe Starck, Mama Shelter sets up hotels in lesser-known, 'out of the way' neighbourhoods in big cities. Step forward Mama London , a 195-room hotel a short walk from both Cambridge Heath and Bethnal Green stations. As you'd expect with the Starck name, the emphasis on style with cutting-edge design by French designer Dion & Arles. All of the 195 rooms come with king size beds, 5-star linen and complimentary films, entertainment and WiFi while downstairs there are Japanese-style karaoke rooms, decked out with pinball machines, retro video games, and classic 50s-style microphones. The ground floor living area leads to the 100-cover restaurant which includes an island bar and outdoor courtyard with a retractable glass roof for cocktails al fresco. For tongue in cheek design touches look to the twists on lace doilies, coloured macrame, bright Liberty prints and a graffiti chalkboard ceiling. Brunch is a big deal at other Mama properties so settle in at weekends for leisurely late breakfast accompanied by live music.
