A world away from the chain shops and identikit booming bars that centre around Hammersmith's busy high street and transport hub, the Dartmouth Castle is worth the three-minute detour off the main drag. You'll have to time your visit right as Hammersmith's office workers have found out about the place too and, come down tools time, they can make the charming gastro pub into an uncomfortably loud, crowded place to be. Ordering food at busy times can be more trouble than its worth. Time it right - after 9pm is a good bet - and you'll be delighted by the rustic wooden tables and the impressive standard of the food and charmed by the friendly staff who are happy to provide wine samples if you're not sure what to have. Food, typically, is of the goats cheese or grilled swordfish variety. This is a gastro pub that's giving the Stonemason's Arms down the road a run for its money.
