Ben and Ed Robson take The Clifton, an historic tavern in St John's Wood where King Edward VII used to take his mistress Lillie Langtry for secret trysts, and transform it into a contemporary pub. The brothers, who set up The Horseshoe in Hampstead and ran Boopshi's schnitzel and prosecco bar in Fitzrovia (where Bao Fitzrovia now is), have restored this much loved pub which stood empty for four years. Head chef Karl Calvert (Providores, Beef & Brew and Caravan) brings globally-inspired dishes and punchy flavours to a menu that's split into two sections: smaller 'Drinking House' plates and main course 'Eating House' options. Expect sweet corn jalapeno fritters for brunch and mutton rendang croquettes to go with your craft beer. The atmosphere is casual with interiors designed by Red Deer (Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings and No. 197 Chiswick Fire Station). The open, light space (which has room to seat 65) is filled with cosy Chesterfields, slouchy armchairs and there's room outside for 25.
