When the Business Art Galleries were set up they were the first of their kind. It was in fact the first business art consultancy in London. The original idea, a joint venture with the Royal Academy of Arts, was to match-make businesses and public institutions with art to suit their tastes and purposes. An obvious idea now and, twenty years on, one that is much copied and the sole purpose of too many art galleries to mention here. In 1987, owner John Hutchings moved the business from the Royal Academy of Arts to Windmill Street, under the new name of the New Academy Gallery. In this same street John Hutchings also owned the Curwen Gallery, (which was now running separately from the Curwen Print Studio) and in 2005 both these galleries were merged under one roof to form the Curwen & New Academy Gallery. Together with wife Jill, John runs a series of frequently changing exhibitions and continues to match businesses with art works that enhance their surroundings.
