This gallery at the celebrated V & A is the premier exhibit of Islamic art in Britain today. Tracing Muslim art from its roots in 8th century Iran, all the way to 19th century Turkey; from former Moorish outposts on the Iberian peninsular, right to the borders of India - this permanent exhibition provides us with hundreds of glittering examples, demonstrating incredible variation in style and workmanship.
Thanks to a £5 million donation by a wealthy Saudi businessman, the Jameel Gallery was treated to a make-over which took over three years to complete, finally reopening in July 2006. It needed it too, the previous display, lashed together clumsily in the post-war period, was a lesson in how not to get visitors enthused with the exhibits. The latest incarnation, however, redresses the balance entirely, drawing the eye in, using the world's oldest carpet as its mesmerising centrepiece. Supposedly commissioned for the Shah of Persia in 1539, this enormous floral-patterned rug, with over 30 million knots, is simply stunning.
The myriad of other treasures to feast your eyes on includes perfectly crafted ceramics, caskets, fabrics, bejewelled robes, vicious weaponry, painstaking calligraphy friezes and a host of gorgeously adorned copies of the ubiquitous Koran.
