City Airport, London

City Airport is the smallest of London's airports, but also the only commercial airport actually in London. It's an atmospheric place: located out East in the Royal Docks amid a flat open landscape, with the runway actually the quay between Royal Albert Dock and King George V Dock of water, making takeoff and landing particularly thrilling.

Quick links to Canary Wharf (served by an express shuttle bus), the City (22 minutes to Bank) and the West End make it London's main business airport, and hotels in the area do much to accommodate this clientele.

Locally it's only a mile from the ExCel exhibition centre, two miles from main the 2012 Olympics site, and across the river from the O2 Arena.

Travelodge City Airport is the closest of the City Airport hotels, literally right beside the runway. If that sounds too close for comfort (fear not - planes from this airport are small and don't fly at night), there's another Travelodge by the Blackwall Tunnel at the junction of two arterial roads out of London: the A12 and A13. Good rates are also to be had at Holiday Inn's Express venture at Canning Town (three stops from City Airport and two from ExCel)

The four-star Crowne Plaza London Docklands is a stroll away from the ExCel centre, with tranquil waterside spaces (and an indoor pool), and just five minutes from London City Airport.

Hilton operates two good City Airport hotels, one at the heart of Canary Wharf; another across the river in Rotherhithe, linked by a shuttle ferry. Both offer excellent business facilities and conference rooms, as well as all the shops, restaurants and entertainment of Canary Wharf.

But City Airport's ultra convenient location and diminutive size means that you can look beyond City Airport hotels to those in central London - particularly City hotels - and still be less than an hour away from check in.
